The Matthew Logan Scarpati Memorial Soccer Tournament was established in the memory of 19 year old Matt Scarpati, a University of Buffalo freshman and Half Hollow Hills East graduate who was tragically killed on July 20th, 2009 by a drunken motorcyclist on the Wantagh Bike Path.
Matt, was an avid soccer player, and following his death The Miles for Matt Foundation was created in his memory. This tournament serves as an annual fundraiser for the foundation. For a list of beneficiaries of the foundation, please visit our "Accomplishments" page.
What is the format of this tournament?
The open age non-club division will consist of teams comprised of both high school/college varsity players, alumni, others interested in playing etc, grouped by level of ability. Groupings will be divided/combined at the discretion of the tournament directors.
The tournament is hosted by the Miles for Matt Foundation and HBC Soccer, sanctioned by US Club Soccer.
When and where is the tournament taking place?
The tournament will take place on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 at Half Hollow Hills HS East in Dix Hills, NY. Game schedules will be released following the close of registration.
How many games will be played?
Each team will play a minimum of 3 games.
How many players will play for each team?
All games are 7 v 7, and teams can carry as many as 11 players.
How long are games?
Games will be 40 minutes in length: two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime.
I would like to contribute to the tournament book by taking out adspace. How can I do this?
Please visit the Tournament Book page. You can elect to purchase a quarter page, half page, or full page ad through the submission form. Also, all donors will be entitled to tournament book space, even if they have donated and did not elect to take out space in the book.
What if I don't want to play?
The tournament is about more than just soccer. The tournament also aims to bring the community together to celebrate the life of a wonderful son, brother, teammate, and friend. We encourage all people who knew Matt to come down on the day of the tournament and take part in some of the other things that will be going on that day.
What else will be going on at the tournament?
The tournament will feature plenty of food, music, a raffle of the nearly $1000 in items donated to the tournament, and the 106.1 BLI prize truck will be making an appearance as well.
