3rd Annual Matthew Logan Scarpati Memorial Soccer Tournament Announced
The Matthew Logan Scarpati Memorial Soccer Tournament will return once again on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 at Half Hollow Hills HS East in Dix Hills, NY.
The Matthew Logan Scarpati Memorial Soccer Tournament was created in the honor and memory of Matt Scarpati, a 19 year old University of Buffalo freshman who was tragically struck and killed in July 2009 by a drunken motorcyclist who veered off of the road while Scarpati was changing a flat bicycle tire on the Wantagh Bike Path, which runs adjacent to the Wantagh Parkway.
The tournament, hosted by the Miles for Matt Foundation and HBC Soccer, serves to benefit the Miles for Matt Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created in Matt’s memory by the Scarpati family. In 2010, the foundation pledged $25,000 of tournament funds to Sunrise Day Camp, America’s only dedicated day camp for children with cancer. The camp will be naming a soccer field in Scarpati’s honor in summer 2012. Additionally, the foundation has provided scholarships to the University of Buffalo, the Half Hollow Hills School District, Long Island Junior Soccer League, along with donations to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), as well as various other initiatives.
Scarpati was an avid soccer player, lacrosse player, and cyclist, and the outpouring of support through the first two tournaments has spoken to how beloved he was. The 2010 and 2011 tournaments welcomed 36 teams and over 350 high school varsity and college soccer players, many former teammates of Scarpati.
The 2012 tournament is excited to build on the success of the first two tournaments, and expand to include even more teams and players who wish to play.
